Alaska Honey Comb

Our bee's spend the long Alaskan summers feeding on the abundant fields of fireweed.       Fireweed is tall perennial herb with large clusters of rose to purple flowers, fireweed grows   in dense stands on cut or burnt over timber lands for 12 to 15 years after tree removal or burn. This honey is one of the lightest and sweetest honey's, prized for its water-white color.                      Its taste is delicate and very sweet with very subtle, tea-like notes.

Fireweed is a member of the Onagracae family of plants. Its name refers to the fact it is a   "pioneer plant" quick to appear in burned over areas. As the growth of new trees and shrubs                                    re-grow they crowd out the fireweed plants.

Athabascans would boil the stem & roots of Devils Club as a tea for fevers, stomach trouble, coughs, colds, and tuberculosis. Medicinally, they use an infusion of root bark for general strength, colds, chest pains, arthritis, black eyes, gallstones, stomach ulcers, constipation and tuberculosis. Devil's club is a ginseng plant, being a member of the Araliaceae family, & closely resembling Siberian ginseng. The potential for Devil's Club, hereafter called Alaskan ginseng, is great. Alaskan ginseng is a new panax ginseng from the Pacific Northwest (panax is the genus name of Oriental & wild American ginseng, & is the Latin root   for the word panacea).

Bee pollen is among the oldest known dietary supplements. Its use as a rejuvenator and       medicine date back to the early Egyptians and ancient Chinese. It is rich in vitamins,             especially B vitamins, and contains trace amounts of minerals, elements, amino acids, and     enzymes.
The pollen is composed of 55%-+carbohydrates, 60%-+protein, 3%-+ minerals and           vitamins, 2%-+ fatty acids, and 5%-+ other substances. It really depends on the pollen. It   contains very small amounts of many substances considered to be antioxidants, including     betacarotene, vitamins C and E, lycopene, selenium, and flavonoids.

Alaska Made Honey

I have a small beekeeping operation of 25 hives, and we are currently looking to expand our operation to 100 +. Because of our short summers, most of the nectar flows only last about two week's some of the most productive flower's are Wild Rose, dandelion, Clover, and our favorite Fireweed to make about 75 to 100 pounds of honey a year from each hive.
